Cape Palliser is the southernmost point of New Zealand's North Island and has a rich history of early Māori occupation, believed to date back to around 1300. It was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 in honor of Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, and the area is also known for its iconic lighthouse built in 1897.
