Across the Slant of Time

I’m excited to exhibit my encaustic artwork, Across the Slant of Time, at Artbourne this November 5th-8th at Wellesley College in Eastbourne.

Did you know this historic building was originally a hotel, Days Bay House, built in 1903?

How fitting to connect its history with today’s Gen Alpha students, growing up in a completely different world!

What can an old school writing slant tell us about the world we live in today?

Made on a reclaimed writing slant once used to teach handwriting, Across the Slant of Time connects two generations separated by almost a century: the Greatest Generation, who grew up in the early 1900s, and Generation Alpha, today’s children growing up in a digital world.

The worn surface carries traces of the past, while layers of encaustic wax give it a new life. Something once used to teach children how to write becomes a place to explore how we communicate, learn and understand the world.

Our grandparents and great-grandparents lived through enormous changes, including war, hardship and the arrival of new technologies. Today’s children are growing up with smartphones, social media and artificial intelligence. Their worlds may look very different, but both generations have had to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

Through wax, texture and the marks of time, I bring the past into the present — inviting us to consider what we carry forward into the future.
