There’s a new Art Gallery in Kapiti!

There is something quietly powerful about what can happen when creative people come together through connection rather than careful planning.

Coastal Creatives is a collective gallery formed by ten Kapiti artists, including myself, brought together through friendship and a shared passion for making. Located at Coastlands Shopping Centre, the gallery is home to a diverse group of creatives, each contributing their own unique voice and medium to the space. As a collective, we share the responsibility of running the gallery, each of us spending a few days a month in store, creating a space that is both collaborative and deeply personal.

How it began

Over time, many of us found ourselves crossing paths again and again. Artshows, exhibitions, and conversations that kept circling back. There was a natural alignment, not just in what we created, but in how we supported one another as artists.

Out of those connections came a simple idea. To create something together. A shared space where our work could live side by side, where we could connect directly with people, and where the experience felt as human as the art itself.

A collective space

Our gallery brings together a wide range of styles and mediums. Each artist adds something different, and that diversity is what gives the space its energy.

What makes it truly special is the way it operates. When you walk into the gallery, you are often meeting the artist behind the work. There is a direct connection, a chance to hear the story, the process, and the meaning behind each piece.

There is no separation between maker and viewer.

More than just a gallery

Being present in the gallery has changed how I share my work. Conversations happen naturally. People are curious, open, and often willing to engage in ways that go beyond simply viewing.

These moments add depth. The work becomes part of a conversation rather than something observed at a distance.

There is also something deeply grounding about being part of a collective like this. We support each other, learn from each other, and share the rhythm of the space together. It is a reminder that while art can often be created in solitude, it does not have to be experienced that way.

Built on trust and friendship

Coastal Creatives exists because of trust. There is no rigid structure, just a shared commitment to show up for the space and for each other.

Each artist contributes in their own way. We rotate through the gallery, problem solve together, and celebrate each other’s milestones. The foundation is simple but strong.

A different kind of retail experience

Being located in a shopping centre creates a different kind of connection with people. Many visitors discover the gallery by chance. They step inside without expectation and often leave with a new appreciation for local art.

It makes the experience feel accessible, open, and welcoming.

Looking ahead

This is just the beginning for Coastal Creatives. The space will continue to evolve as we grow, shaped by the work we create and the people who walk through the gallery.

If you are visiting Coastlands, I invite you to come in, take your time, and explore. If one of us is there, start a conversation.

You may find that the story behind the work stays with you long after you leave. We will also be staring workshops in the coming weeks.
